The production and logistics planning in ERP systems, such as SAP ERP PP, uses the MRP-II method and requires material demands and capacity planning to be separated. ERP systems are transaction-orientated.

ORSOFT Manufacturing Workbench follows the principles of advanced planning and scheduling and offers interactive, simultaneous multi-resource planning, allowing the planning scenarios to be simulated and optimised.

Burden Calculation

The central task of the burden calculator is to assign an optimal bill of material to a process order / production order by considering the quality constraints of the finished product. Here, a set of important constraints must be considered. One finished product can be produced by many different bills of material (different recipes) and the planner needs the capability to compare these variants; this calculation can be based on a linear optimization algorithm.

High Rack Storage Area Optimization

Various industrial processes use high rack storage areas in order to de-couple production stages. Because conventional production planning systems often do not support optimization of the intermediate storage process when planning consecutive production stages, storage bins of high rack storage areas are in practice allocated to only one specific material per bin at one time. In particular when handling flat and stackable intermediates such as various sheets, valuable storage space is wasted just because of restrictive organization or inflexible IT systems.

There is a certain potential for price optimization in terms of production planning (production sequence, machinery) and associated processes – like cut or mixture optimization – as well.

Tank- and Silo Management

Production processes in the food industries, in particular in dairies and in beverage production, often require intermediate storage in tanks or silos. Often a tank may hold different products at different times, in that case the tank is denoted as "multi-product tank" or "non-determined tank". A single production batch may also use multiple source tanks for the same raw material component and multiple target tanks for the same target component. Scheduling of such production is highly complicated.
